The hardest part of a first course is often deciding what to leave out. Start with a result learners can demonstrate, then include only the concepts and practice needed to reach it. A compact course with a complete learning path is easier to finish and improve than a broad collection of unfinished lessons.

Sequence the necessary knowledge
List what someone needs to know before each activity and arrange lessons accordingly. State prerequisites clearly so you do not spend the opening module surprising learners with assumptions they could not anticipate.
Build practice into the structure
Give learners something to do with each important idea. A worked example, short activity or focused quiz can reveal whether the explanation prepared them for the next step.

Write the final activity first
Describe what learners will make or demonstrate at the end. Keep it small enough to complete with the resources and time described in the course introduction.

Outline the route backwards
Identify the skills needed for that activity, group them into modules and give each lesson one purpose. Remove interesting detours that do not support the chosen outcome.

Review the complete experience
Read every instruction, check resource access and attempt the exercises. Ask whether a newcomer can tell what to do next without needing an explanation outside the course.
How long should my first course be?
Long enough to support its outcome and no longer by default. Use the learning task to determine the scope rather than aiming for an arbitrary lesson count.
Should I add a quiz to every module?
Use a quiz when it checks something meaningful. Some modules are better assessed through a practical exercise, reflection or clearly described project milestone.
